10 Reasons I Value the AABC Birth Institute

Birth center owner and midwife Lesley Rathbun shares why she values the experiences at the AABC Birth Institute not only for herself but also for her staff, both administrative and clinical.

1. Meet Experts and Influencers Face to Face

The Birth Institute is a gathering place for experts who support the birth center model of care. It is a unique opportunity to meet face to face and have personal contact with a variety of industry experts.

2. Sharpen the Saw

Stephen Covey, author of highly-acclaimed books on success in business lists it as his seventh habit of highly effective people. The idea is sometimes you have to take a break from the routine of your work to sharpen your skills. A dull axe won't cut a tree as effectively as a sharp one.

3. Learning in a New Space - Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

The reason so many businesses have off-site meetings is to get out of a rut. Working in the same building, drinking out of the same coffee cup, sitting in the same chair can prevent fresh thinking and new ideas. For some, attending a conference could be outside their comfort zone. Breaking out of your comfort zone could be just what you need to spark new ideas.

4. Networking Opportunities

You have the opportunity to mix and mingle, form new relationships, and strengthen existing ones. Over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine you could make a connection that could benefit your birth center.

5. New Tools, New Tips, New Tactics

The exhibit hall is an opportunity to find out what new tools and products are available and to get tips and tactics to make the most of what the vendors are offering.

6. Invest in Yourself

Yes, conferences are expensive, but they are an investment in yourself, your career, and your business. You are worth the price, and the opportunity to learn and better your birth center is invaluable.

7. The Energy of Like-Minded Individuals

Everyone who attends the Birth Institute is there because they have a passion for improving maternity care and growing birth centers. Renew and refresh your passion and commitment from the energy of your peers.

8. Greater Focus

Have you been thinking about making changes to improve your services but are not sure how or where to start? Attending the education sessions can help get you moving and focus on your plans.

9. The Serendipity of the Random Education Session

Some of the best sessions I have attended have been the ones I didn’t have on my radar as a “must go to.” I never would have sought out learning opportunities gained without randomly picking sessions to attend.

10. Have Fun!

Last but not least is having fun! You never know what the hosting birth center will surprise you with. Who knew I would learn to throw a rope at a birth center conference? Enjoy the culture of a new city - tasting their unique foods and seeing the sights is entertaining and expands your life experiences. Staying in a nice hotel, swimming in the pool, or relaxing with a cocktail in the bar are always fun and relaxing. The AABC Foundation Gala event is my favorite event and is always a great time. It is such a worthy cause to celebrate birth centers and raise funds to serve more families.
